CHEMICAL PLANT CONSTRUCTION BEGINS IN TANZANIA

Tanzania begins construction of large chemical plant in Africa.

The construction of a huge chemical plant has kick-off in Tanzania. According to report, the plant will be one of the largest in Africa. It will also provide jobs for people in the area.

The Project name Chlor-Alkali plant will cost a total of US$112 million. It will also be a major market for salt producers in the country after completion. Because the chemical products for water treatment for the domestic market will be generated using salt sourced from the Coast Region.

The construction of the project will serve as a sigh of relieve to Tanzanian government as it has been spending billions to import the compound mainly used in the treatment of water.

The project is a joint partnership between Junaco Tanzania and Serba Company of Malaysia. Junaco Tanzania has 75% of the shares.

Junaco Tanzania Ltd Managing Director Justin Lambert said “We are urging salt makers to stay put despite market challenges. This plant when operational will be consuming 2,500 tonnes of salt monthly.”

Serba Dinamik Holdings Bhd Chief Executive Officer Karim Abdullah said “This is a landmark project for Tanzania and one of the largest chemical plants in Africa. Our track record speaks for itself. He said, we will be banking on our experience over the years to successfully develop this chemical plant.”

The US $112m plant will take 23 months to complete and production will start thereafter.

The chemical plant will be constructed in two (2) phases; phase one will be for chlorine chemical and phase two for other by products. 80% of the product will be for the export market, majorly Asia, East Africa and parts of the European Union and the remaining 20% will be for the domestic market.

The project is to be complete by 2020.
