CHINESE CONTRACTOR, A THREAT TO NATIONAL SECURITY

A Chinese contractor that participated and won the tender for construction of Moshupa Primary Hospital in Botswana is rejected. Apparently, the state directorate of intelligence and security is claiming that the contractor is a threat to national security. Following this advise, the Botswana’s Public Procurement and Asset Disposal Board backed out of an initial decision to award the tender to China Jiangsu Construction Group Corp.

This decision has led both parties to a bitter legal battle. On Friday, Lobatse High Court’s Justice Busang hammered another nail on the coffin for China Jiangsu by dismissing its review application and in turn awarding government costs of application up to and including the date of judgement.

ABOUT PROJECT

The USD 35 million project is a 70-bed hospital facility, and will serve an area that is lacking healthcare infrastructure. During the ground breaking ceremony in 2019, former Moshupa/Manyana MP, Karabo Gare, said the hospital will relief his constituents from travelling long distances to seek medical attention in other areas. In addition, the construction of the Hospital will create job opportunities for Moshupa/ Manyana Constituents.
