CONSTRUCTION MANAGER AT GENERAL ELECTRIC (GE), MALI

GE is looking for Construction Manager to monitor all site-based construction activities of 225/33 kV Substations in Mali.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The position holder directly reports to the Grid Solutions AS Systems Project Manager & is responsible to manage the GE Project Site Team & Sub Contractors to drive the Site Execution activities as per GE Quality, Construction & EHS Process and guidelines. Will be fully responsible for coordination with customer representatives to ensure client satisfaction as per the contract.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Report directly to GE ACS Project Manager and managing the GE & Subcontractor project Site Team
  • Implementing, Monitoring, recording and reporting of the Health, Safety and Environmental performance of the project site as per GE EHS standards
  • Assist EHS manager in carrying out EHS audits & trainings
  • Reviewing and commenting on site health and safety documentation from the contractors, checking that appropriate construction risk assessments and method statements are in place for works being undertaken, prior to their commencement. This work will be supported by site EHS specialist
  • Monitoring, recording and reporting of the contractor(s) compliance with permits and other regulations and requirements
  • Liaising with key site parties and leading the onsite interfacing with the contractor(s)
  • Monitor and record the contractor’s construction works and interfaces during construction phase for all works at site including assessing compliance with the environmental and social impact assessment and other environmental documentation, in conjunction with the Client’s local advisor and GE Project team
  • Check that such construction methods conform to contractual requirements, international standards and good industry practice
  • Manage and maintain site files and registers
    o Record and report on site construction activities including production of:
  • Daily log/diary
  • Weekly report (including photographic record) to be issued including any key safety issues
  • Input into Project monthly report, and site progress meetings
  • Oversee/inspect on-site works to assure the quality of the work performed are in compliance with contract specifications, project schedule, design drawings and consents
  • Monitor key construction events, through sample inspection of these activities to check that the contractors are complying with the contract requirements and the contractors’ project Quality Plan
  • Measure and verify quantities of work so to assist in the certification of the main contractors’ payment application

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • An appropriate qualification in Civil / Electrical Engineering, degree level would be an advantageous but equivalent knowledge or experience would also be considered
  • Have appropriate health and safety experience, training and qualifications in line with international standards for roles of this nature to be able to identify and halt unsafe works

Desired Characteristics:

  • Experience:
  • Previous experience of undertaking the role of Construction Manager on a large EHV Substation Project. Construction experience in Sub-Saharan Africa would be an advantage but is not essential
  • Have previous experience in the installation and commissioning of key elements of the project including, but not limited to the following:
  • Concrete batching, placing, testing and curing
  • Reinforcement detailing, fixing and inspection
  • Road and drainage design and construction
  • Building construction including foundations, walls, roofing, internal and external finishes and building services
  • Cable trenching methods and installation
  • Excavation and geotechnical assessment of foundation formation soils
  • Site Lifting Plans and crane lifting operations including unloading and lifting of large components (using cranes and other mechanized lifting devices)
  • Have previous experience in the installation and commissioning of key elements of the project including, but not limited to the following:
  • High voltage switchgear (up to 400kV)
  • Power transformers
  • Instrument transformers
  • Medium voltage switchgear
  • Reactive compensation equipment
  • Power and control cabling
  • Protection systems
  • SCADA systems
  • Earthing systems
  • Fibre optic cabling and systems
  • Site telecoms systems
  • LV power systems and auxiliary equipment including control and instrumentation
  • Grid connection interface works
  • Electrical HV safety rules & safe systems of work
  • Civil works associated with the electrical installation, such as plinths etc.
  • Experience with stakeholder liaison
  • Knowledge:
  • Be knowledgeable on international standards and ‘best practice’ in relation to construction
  • Be knowledgeable on environmental legislation and good industry practice in relation to construction works
  • Be knowledgeable on the key applicable standards and specifications associated with the civil and electrical works construction for sites of this nature
    Other:
  •  Ability to be proactive and recommend and approve corrective actions if required
  • Ability to work remotely but integrate with the GE’s wider team
  • Ability to communicate effectively, and to accurately and concisely report both verbally and in writing. Proficiency in FRENCH and ENGLISH are mandatory. Both Speaking & Writing are a must
  • IT proficiency, in particular, MS Word, MS Excel, or similar
