GHANA VRA ISSUE NOTICE OF POTENTIAL SPILLAGE FROM AKOSOMBO DAM

The Volta River Authority (VRA) has issued an alert about a potential spillage of excess water from the Akosombo dam, a precautionary measure aimed at maintaining the dam’s structural integrity and ensuring community safety.

VRA Deputy Chief Executive in Charge of Services, Ing. Ken Arthur, communicated the alert to over 40 stakeholders, stating that engagements would be held to discuss potential implications and mitigative measures.

Last October, a similar spillage caused significant damage to communities in the Volta and Eastern Regions, affecting 88,000 people, although no deaths were reported. At that time, the VRA faced criticism for allegedly failing to inform residents in advance of the flooding, a claim the authority later denied.

Reconstruction efforts for the affected settlements were supported by NGOs, North-Tongu MP Samuel Okudgeto Ablakwa, and some media firms.
