KENYA CONSIDERING FULL OWNERSHIP OF KENYA AIRWAYS

Kenya government considering full ownership of Kenya airways to effectively ward off competition from other state-owned airlines in Africa.

According to the Transport Principal Secretary Esther Koimett; the Kenyan government is considering taking back full ownership of Kenya Airways which is its national carrier. The full ownership of Kenya Airways is to enable the government effectively forestall competition from other renowned national carrier airlines in the continent.

Kenya government owns 48.9 percent stake in Kenya Airways; while Air France-KLM and KQ Lenders 2017 Ltd own 7.8 percent and 38.1 percent respectively.

Koimett says the Kenyan government can create a plan that will lead to 100 percent ownership of the Airline. However, the only obstacle that can hinder this path is outstanding loans; but there have already been a renegotiation for the repayment schedules of the loans.

Also, a parliamentary committee is analyzing a joint venture proposal between the airline and the state-owned airports operator to run the nation’s biggest airport. From the analyses so far, the proposal still requires some little adjustments.

Kenya Airports Authority Managing Director Jonny Andersen said the  joint venture could help reverse loss of market share to competitors such as Ethiopian Airlines Group.
