MINING ACTIVITIES COMMENCES IN GUINEA AFTER RIOTS

Bauxite mining activities commences again in Guinea after dialogue with protesters. 

Protests and riots by enraged Guinean youths due to electricity cuts and lack of job and services had led to the halt of mining activities in the country, especially in the Guinea’s Boke region which is “home to two major companies that each produce about 15 million tonnes of the aluminium ore bauxite annually,” which makes up almost all of the country’s production.

Mining activities have commenced this week as local authorities are currently negotiating terms with the protesters for a definitive solution to this unrest.

This report was gathered from the statement of an official at the state agency for the development of mining infrastructure, “All mining operations are continuing normally since the end of last week,” he also added “This afternoon there will be a meeting between the protest leaders and local authorities to find a definitive solution to these problems.”
