RWANDA ANNOUNCE MASTER PLANS FOR NEW KIGALI CITY

Master plan for New Kigali city to be unveiled in August

Plans are set in motion for the unveiling of a new Kigali city. The project is expected to lay out the city’s development roadmap for the next 30 years.

The plan which is part of Rwanda 2050 vision was presented to stakeholders at the City of Kigali. During the ceremony, Fred Mugisha said people were given adequate time to provide their inputs in the proposed new master plan.

The process for the master plan has taken some time to achieve. In June last year, the process for updating and reviewing the master plan took off. This was after resident become concern with multiple issues such as shortage of low cost housing, open spaces for recreational parks etc.

Director of Kigali Urban Planning Fred Mugisha  said “We value people’s recommendations because the master plan is theirs to implement. Consultations were conducted, from the beneficiaries [community] to decision-makers, and we are now presenting their inputs to developers.”

The proposed master plan will take care of affordable housing units on the periphery of the central business district.  It will also encourage use of public transport by at least 70 per cent. This is due to limited parking space for private vehicles.

Chairperson of Rwanda Architects’ Association, Jean Runuya said “The fact that the City of Kigali put into consideration people’s inputs. That it shows they want to ensure that everyone feels included.”

The Master plan will generate at least 1.7 million jobs in the next 30 years with a five phase plan.
