THE EXTRAORDINARY CHINA-AFRICA SUMMIT ON SOLIDARITY AGAINST COVID-19

President Xi Jinping, of the People’s Republic of China and Chair of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) alongside President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa and Chair of the African Union (AU) and President Macky Sall of Senegal and the co-Chair of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) host African leaders to an extraordinary China-Africa Summit.

The Summit is aimed at exploring opportunities for African States to leverage multilateral cooperation, through the FOCAC mechanism, so that resources and knowledge can be mobilised in efforts to combat the COVID-19 pandemic. FOCAC is an official forum that coordinates cooperation between the People’s Republic of China and African States. Participants include the Extended AU Bureau (Kenya, Mali, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Zimbabwe, Rwanda and Ethiopia.

According to President Cyril Ramaphosa, this Extraordinary China-Africa Solidarity Summit against COVID-19 demonstrates the depth and resilience of solidarity between China and Africa. 

During the extraordinary China Africa Solidarity Summit against COVID-19, Africa launches a medical supplies platform to fight COVID-19. As it stands, Africa is in dire need of medical supplies, testing equipment and facilities to isolate and quarantine people.
