UAE AND EGYPT SIGN DEAL TO CONSTRUCT WORLD LARGEST WIND FARM

UAE and Egypt have agreed to jump in the race in building one of the world’s largest onshore wind farms in Egypt.

The project once completed will see Egypt have the world’s largest wind farm whereby overtaking the current one at Gansu, China.

The agreement was made in COP27 with UAE President H.H Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi who had overseen the signing between Masdar based in Abu Dhabi and Egypt’s Infinity Power and Hassan Allam Utilities. The project MoU was signed in Sharm El Sheikh by H.E Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, Special Envoy for Climate, and Chairman of Masdar.

The wind farm is expected to generate 10 gigawatts of power with Al Jaber stating that it will be “one of the largest winds farms in the world.” He adds that the agreement is a “testament to the renewable energy ambitions of the United Arab Emirates and the Republic of Egypt, and demonstrates Masdar’s status as a global leader in clean energy.”

Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed says that “the deal is consistent with our commitment to advance renewable energy solutions that support sustainable development.” Upon completion, the wind farm will produce 47,790-gigawatt hours of clean energy annually while also offsetting 23.8 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions. For context, that is equivalent to nearly 9 percent of Egypt’s carbon dioxide output as of present. It will also cut back on natural gas costs within Egypt, saving the country an estimated $5 billion annually.

“It has always been our endeavor to create opportunities where organizations and governments can make the shift to a more sustainable and renewable source of energy. We are confident that this project will greatly benefit the country and enable Egypt to take great steps forward on its journey to becoming a more sustainable and green nation. We look forward to expanding our portfolio of sustainable energy solutions that benefit not only Egypt but provide the entire continent with a clean, green future,” says Nayer Fouad, CEO of Infinity Power.

As part of their Green Corridor initiative, a grid dedicated to renewable energy projects, Egypt’s newly agreed project with UAE’s Masdar will add Cairo’s overall goal of making sure that renewable energy takes up to 42 percent of the country’s broader energy by 2035.
