UGANDA SIGNS IGA WITH RUSSIA FOR NUCLEAR ENERGY GENERATION
Ugandan government has signed an Inter-Governmental Agreement(IGA) with Russia on the generation of nuclear energy for non-military use.
The agreement was signed during the 63rd International Atomic Energy Agency(IAEA) General Conference at it’s headquarters in Vienna, Austria. Ugandan Minister of Energy and Mineral Development Eng. Irene Muloni and the Deputy Director General of ROSATOM Nikolai Spasskiy represented their governments during the signing.
Eng. Irene voiced he’s gratitude to the Russian government for their cooperation and promised to work diligently in accordance with the agreement. “Hence, we will use the project constructively to develop the economy as much as possible”.
Also, Spasskiy conveyed ROSATOM’s preparedness and dedication in reinforcing the development of Ugandan’s nuclear energy.

The agreement will combine efforts from both parties to construct a nuclear power plant and a nuclear science and technology center in Uganda. The center will be for reactor research, nuclear training and development.
The facility will be provided with the necessary equipment for production and application of radioisotopes for industrial, healthcare and agricultural use. Also, it will be key in strengthening nuclear and radiation safety, as well as education.
