KAM INVESTS US $15m TO BETTER KENYA POWER SECTOR.
Kenya Association of Manufactures (KAM) in partnership with Kenya Power invests US $15m to stabilize the power sector in Kenya.
Kenya Association of Manufactures (KAM) are in partnership with Kenya Power to stabilize power in Nyanza and West Kenya. The project will cost US $15m and involves the installation of new transformers, and repair of existing substations.
Hence, the project ones completed will reduce power outage in these regions. Also, plans for maintenance are ongoing to prevent future problems while supplying steady power to customers.
The current capacity of the power sector is 2,650MW while peak demand is about 1,770MW. Some of the big consumers were forced to use alternative means of generating power thus the current peak demand. This is because of the challenge with distribution and transmission which they are planning to tackle with this project.
KAM together with Kenya power are focused on optimizing the energy mix by ensuring that more renewable energy is used to reduce reliance on thermal electricity and lower the fuel cost charge.
Part of the funds is for the installation of additional transformers in Kisumu South, Chemelil, Muhoroni, Sibembe and Bukembe substations to cope with growing power demand.
