PRESIDENT OF BURUNDI PLANS TO STEP DOWN COME 2020 ELECTIONS.
Burundi decision to step down in 2020 came as a surprise as the new constitution availed him the opportunity to stay more in office.
The Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza regardless of the belief that he passed a new law to extend his stay as president, announced that he will step down come 2020. The announcement came after the constitution to that would have allowed him stay more in office was passed.
Burundians happily accepted the new constitutions and changes to the old ones including the part that allows the president more time in office. Critics commented that the new constitutions are meant for selfish reasons. He also added that he is ready to support and strengthen the new Government.
As president of Burundi since 2005, his intention for re-election in 2015 lead to a deadly political crisis. Oppositions said he has gone against a peace deal that ended the civil war.
