Ugandan Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja has initiated the upgrade of a 39-kilometer road in Sironko District, Eastern Region, in collaboration with the Chinese firm Shandong Luqiao Group Co., Ltd.
At the launch ceremony, Nabbanja drove a grader symbolically and urged the community to safeguard construction equipment to ensure uninterrupted progress.
The project, funded by the African Development Bank, aims to upgrade the Namagumba-Budadiri-Nalugugu Road from gravel to asphalt.
Samuel Muhoozi, from the Uganda National Roads Authority, highlighted that the road will significantly benefit local farmers by facilitating quicker market access in the mountainous region, where transportation is challenging. He expressed confidence in the Chinese firm based on their proven track record in Uganda.
Project manager Jiang Chuanliang stated that the construction will take three years, employing over 600 locals. Upon completion, travel time will be reduced from one hour to 20 minutes.
The road will also enhance access to Mount Elgon National Park and Sipi Falls, boosting community services, tourism, and trade in Arabica coffee, bananas, Irish potatoes, and fresh milk with Kampala and Kenya.
