HOW ACCESS TO DRINKING WATER INCREASED BY 69% IN TOGO

In Togo, access to drinking water increased to 69% of the population in 2023, up from 47.66% in 2014, according to an update from the Ministry of Water on July 2, 2024. In rural areas, access rose from 47.7% in 2014 to 74.4% in 2023. In semi-urban and urban areas, access reached 55.9% and 69% respectively in 2023, compared to 42.6% and 47.7% in 2014.

The Ministry attributes this improvement to various government projects and programs, with substantial financial support from development partners. One notable project is PASSCO, backed by the French Development Agency with CFA6.5 billion, which led to the construction of 400 new boreholes in Northern Togo. Additionally, NGOs and international institutions like the World Bank, BOAD, and AfDB have played a significant role.

Togo aims to provide 85% of its population with clean water by 2025 and achieve 100% coverage by 2030. To reach these goals, the government has established the National Drinking Water Supply Plan and the Water Master Plan for Greater Lomé, supported by strategic partnerships.
