TANZANIA PM LAY FOUNDATION STONE FOR CONSTRUCTION OF LANDING SITE AND FISH MARKET

Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa has laid the foundation stone for the construction of a landing site and a fish market in Chato district, Geita region. These projects, aimed at boosting the local economy, underscore the government’s commitment to involving fishermen and farmers in development plans.

During his one-day tour, Majaliwa emphasized the significance of the project in providing opportunities for those involved in the fishing sector to benefit and increase their income. He highlighted that the new market will bring opportunities closer to the fishermen of the area.

The 1.75 billion Tanzanian shillings project includes the construction of modern wholesale and retail fish markets, a fish drying machine with a capacity to dry 10 tons per day, an ice production plant, and cold storage rooms for preserving fish. The Prime Minister urged residents to fully utilize these new facilities to enhance their economy.

Chato legislator Dr. Medard Kalemani praised the government for its support, mentioning that President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s administration has approved 6.7 billion shillings for fishing activities in Chato District.

Project Manager Engineer George Kwandu noted that the project’s completion would reduce fish loss, particularly dagaa, post-harvest. It is expected to increase the value of fish products and strengthen government revenue collection. The project, slated for completion by August 2, 2024, is also set to enhance trade, improve food and nutrition security, and provide 1,473 jobs for fishermen, traders, and other stakeholders.
