TOGO GOVT. LAUNCH URBAN ROAD DEVELOPMENT PROJECT AT DAPAONG

In Togo, road development work in the town of Dapaong (610 km north of Lomé) began on Thursday, December 14, 2023. The first sod was given by the Minister of urban planning, housing, and land reform, Kodjo Adédzé.

The work, planned to last eight months, will consist of development, sanitation, and asphalting over a total of 1000 linear meters of road. The project also takes into account the rehabilitation and strengthening of the old rainwater drainage network over 2,300 linear meters.

This work planned as part of the Urban Development Infrastructure Project (PIDU) and the Living Environment Improvement Program (PACV) will cost a little over 2 billion FCFA and is financed by the World Bank.

These projects, according to the Ministry of Urban Planning, aim to meet the challenges linked to urban infrastructure. “ Urbanization has accelerated in Togo since the end of the 1960s, and the role of urban infrastructure is becoming increasingly important in the modernization of the economy”, underlined Minister Adédzé who reports that “national statistics show that despite the efforts made by the Government, part of the urban population of Togo lives in neighborhoods where road and sanitation services still need to be improved.

The road development is in addition to other government initiatives as part of the Savanna Region Emergency Program (PURS) developed and implemented to strengthen the resilience and security of communities, facing armed terrorist and violent extremist groups who have threatened peace and security in this part of Togo since November 2021.
