CAN INNOVATION OUTRUN DROUGTH IN MOROCCO ONGOING WATER MANAGEMENT CRISIS

Morocco’s water management situation is indeed complex, with various factors contributing to its current challenges. Such challenges has seen the country come up with different ways towards resolving the nation water droughts.

Morocco faces a growing water scarcity crisis due to climate change, population growth, and traditional water usage patterns. The country’s water availability per capita has significantly declined over the years, indicating a state of water stress.

Meanwhile, the agricultural sector consumes the majority of Morocco’s water resources, posing a significant challenge to water management efforts. Despite efforts to improve efficiency, practices like inefficient irrigation methods continue to strain water resources.

Azzedine El Midaoui, Director of the International Water Research Institute at UM6P while speaking to local media made several observation and request that will aid the country heading into the future when it has to do with the nation water drought.

He noted that “collaborative efforts within the UM6P, along with partnerships with European and African counterparts, highlight Morocco’s dedication to leveraging scientific advancements in climate forecasting”

So far, Morocco has transitioned from supply-based to demand-driven water management approaches since the late 1980s. The country has invested in large-scale dam construction and diversified its strategies to address water challenges. This change has helped the country adaptive water management.

In terms of strategies to ensure water security, Morocco has implemented ways that include the development of early warning systems for droughts and proactive adaptation measures. The national plan for drinking water supply and irrigation reflects the government’s commitment to addressing climate change impacts.

The country is taking a comprehensive and forward-looking approach to water management, recognizing the urgent need to adapt to changing environmental conditions and ensure water security for its citizens.
