CHINESE FIRM TO EMBARKED ON SEWERAGE SYSTEM PROJECT IN RWANDA

The Kigali Centralised Sewerage System project, undertaken by China Railway Construction Engineering Group (CRCEG), is a significant initiative set to enhance sanitation services in Kigali City. Dominique Murekezi, the Ag. Managing Director at WASAC Development Ltd, highlighted that the project aims to establish a comprehensive sewerage network covering 89 kilometers across Kigali and includes the construction of a wastewater treatment plant with a capacity of 12,000 cubic meters.

Commencing in August 2023 with preliminary studies and site setup, the project is expected to be completed by February 2026. The contract was awarded to CRCEG in April 2023 following a competitive bidding process involving firms from China, Portugal, Mauritius, and Egypt. Funding amounting to €87 million was secured from the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the African Development Bank to finance the project.

The decision to adopt a design-build model for the project was influenced by the complexity of implementing such infrastructure in an already densely populated city with existing infrastructures. This approach allows for flexibility in accommodating changes that may arise during the project’s execution, such as modifications to accommodate existing buildings and infrastructures.

The sewerage network will collect wastewater from households and commercial buildings, connecting them to the treatment plant for purification. To facilitate this, manholes will be strategically constructed to channel sewage flow effectively. The design-build model ensures that the contractor can address any unforeseen challenges without the need for contract modifications, contributing to the project’s efficiency and success.

The Kigali Centralised Sewerage System project represents a crucial step towards improving sanitation services in Kigali and promoting public health and environmental sustainability.
