KENYA ANNOUNCED COMMITTMENT PLANS FOR NAIVASHA-KISUMU-MALABA SGR LINES

The commitment by the governments of Kenya and Uganda to commence construction of the Naivasha-Kisumu-Malaba and Malaba-Kampala Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) lines by December marks a significant step forward in regional infrastructure development. Following a meeting of regional Cabinet Secretaries and Ministers, both countries have completed the harmonization of technical specifications and standards for the project.

The joint communique issued after the meeting underscores the commitment to expedite the completion of the remaining SGR sections from Naivasha, Kenya, to Uganda, Rwanda, South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Additionally, efforts will be made to establish a framework for cross-border maintenance of SGR assets and facilities, ensuring seamless multimodal transport services within the Northern Corridor Integration Projects (NCIP).

Harmonizing the planning and development of inland water transport infrastructure is another key aspect highlighted in the communique, emphasizing the need for navigation charts to facilitate efficient transport services.

The commitment to fast-track the development and harmonization of policy, legal, and institutional frameworks for the SGR underscores the determination to overcome challenges and accelerate progress in the project. Joint mobilization of resources is also emphasized as part of this endeavor.

The meeting, attended by key officials from Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, reaffirms the regional commitment to enhancing connectivity and promoting economic growth through strategic infrastructure projects.

The agreement to commence construction on the Naivasha-Kisumu-Malaba and Malaba-Kampala SGR lines builds on previous efforts and agreements, including the tripartite agreement signed in 2014. Despite challenges encountered along the way, the recent agreement signifies renewed momentum and dedication to advancing critical infrastructure development in the region.
