EGYPT GOVT. ALLOCATE LANDS FOR TWO MAJOR WIND POWER PROJECT

The allocation of land for two major wind power projects in Egypt’s Sohag Governorate marks a significant step forward in the country’s renewable energy ambitions. With a combined capacity of 8 gigawatts (GW) and representing $9 billion in foreign direct investment, these projects are among the largest onshore wind power developments in the Middle East and globally.

Developed under a Build-Own-Operate (BOO) model, the projects underscore Egypt’s commitment to expanding its renewable energy capacity. Scatec will independently develop the first project with a capacity of 5 GW, while the Orascom Construction-led consortium, in collaboration with the New and Renewable Energy Development Authority (NREA), will undertake the second project with a capacity of 3 GW, to be developed in phases.

Egypt’s Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Mohamed Shaker, highlighted the significance of these projects in advancing the country’s renewable energy goals. Immediate steps will include conducting site studies, technical assessments, environmental impact analyses, and other crucial evaluations to ensure the successful implementation of both projects.

The land allocation protocols, signed by NREA Executive Chairperson Mohamed El Khayat and representatives from Scatec and the Orascom Construction-led consortium, pave the way for the commencement of these groundbreaking wind power projects, contributing significantly to Egypt’s renewable energy transition and its broader energy sustainability objectives.
