KENYA GOVT. SECURE US$59m LOAN FOR OUTER RING ROAD UPGRADE
Kenya Government has secure a loan for the upgrading of the Nation’s outer ring road.
The loan will help build special lanes for high-capacity buses connecting the Eastern Bypass to Thika Road.
These will further restore the glory of Outer Ring Road, which was initially conceived as a game-changer for the eastern part of Nairobi where a high population density has led to heavy traffic over the years.
National Treasury secretary Ukur Yatani said the loan from Korea’s Export-Import Bank will kick start the upgrade as the Outer Ring road to Thika Road section will be remodelled to accommodate support facilities such as boarding stations and footbridges.
WHY THE UPGRADE IS NEEDED?
More than a year after the road was upgraded and opened for use, traffic jam has worsened between Pipeline Estate and Kariobangi junction, a section interspersed with several pedestrian crossings and passenger picking spots.
According to a publication on the Decongestion of Nairobi-Thika Highway-Outer Ring Road by Ochungo Ochungo, he recommends that urban road authorities should have a dedicated traffic flow simulation team to work closely with road design engineers in city road network decongestion plans.
