LAGOS GOVT. CONTINUE DEMOLITION OF ILLEGAL STRUCTURE IN NIGERIA

The recent crackdown and demolition of illegal structures across Lagos State, as stated by the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, reflect the challenges arising from the state’s rapid development. Wahab emphasized that the government’s actions were not aimed at mistreating citizens but rather at addressing the consequences of urbanization and ensuring accountability for all residents.

Regarding the recent demolition at Dolphin Estate Ikoyi, Wahab explained that a whistleblower alerted authorities to suspicious activities under the bridge, leading to investigations that uncovered illegal tenancy arrangements exploited by a network. Efforts are underway to repurpose these spaces for beneficial use, with initiatives such as transforming the area into a football pitch and partnering with telecom companies for redevelopment.

Wahab stressed the importance of citizens taking responsibility for their living conditions and collaborating with the government to address illegal activities. Notices were served prior to the demolition, and engagements with stakeholders were conducted to address concerns. He urged citizens to report illegal activities to aid in maintaining accountability and preventing the reemergence of illegal structures in the future.

The government’s actions aim to ensure public safety, uphold the rule of law, and create sustainable urban environments where all residents can thrive.
