3D SELFIE SOFTWARE
Researchers at the university of Nottingham has developed a software which uses an artificial intelligence (AI) to convert 2D images into 3D in seconds.
Selfie lover’s have you ever wondered what your 3D selfie would look like? well now you could try something new to experiment with. Researchers at the University of Nottingham have developed a technology capable of producing 3D facial reconstruction from a 2D image called ‘the 3D selfie’.
It was developed using a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) — AI that applies machine learning to give computers the ability to learn without being exactly programmed. the CNN tends to take a good guess regarding the non-visible parts of the face.
All you have to do is upload your selfie on their site, and you’ll get a 3D model of your face in seconds.
According to a study supervisor Dr Yorgos Tzimiropoulos “The main novelty is in the simplicity of our approach which bypasses the complex pipelines typically used by other techniques”
He also added by saying ”We instead came up with the idea of training a big neural network on 80,000 faces to directly learn to output the 3D facial geometry from a single 2D image.”
Apart from facial and emotional recognition applications, the 3D selfie software could be applied in medical aspect to simulate the results of plastic surgery, also assist medical professionals in understanding conditions like autism and depression . The technology could also help people try online accessories such as sunglasses, it has potential for character personalisation within computer games.
