NEWLY OPENED PLASTIC RECYCLING PLANT SET TO HELP COMBAT NAMIBIA’s PLASTIC INDUSTRY

The inauguration of Namibia’s plastic recycling plant marks a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to combat plastic pollution and promote sustainable development.

Minister Pohamba Shifeta announced that the plant will process approximately 500 tonnes of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) per month. The N$24 million joint venture between Coca-Cola Beverages Africa (CCBA) and Namibia Polymer Recyclers demonstrates a commitment to addressing plastic pollution and creating a waste-free Namibia.

The establishment of the recycling plant will significantly reduce the reliance on virgin PET materials and divert substantial waste from landfills, thus preserving the environment. This initiative aligns with Namibia’s broader environmental conservation efforts and commitment to a circular economy.

Minister Shifeta emphasized that the initiative not only addresses plastic pollution but also unlocks economic opportunities for the nation. By doubling the capacity of mechanical plastic waste recycling, the plant contributes to sustainable development while promoting economic prosperity.

The collaboration between Plastic Packaging and Coca-Cola Beverages Africa highlights the power of public-private partnerships in driving sustainable development. These partnerships are crucial for achieving environmental goals while fostering economic growth.

Minister Shifeta stressed the importance of waste management practices such as composting, reusing, and reducing the consumption of single-use plastic products. These measures can significantly reduce mankind’s environmental footprint and contribute to a more sustainable future.

Minister Shifeta called for collective action to combat plastic pollution and create a more sustainable future. He highlighted the importance of collaboration in turning the tide against plastic pollution and emphasized the interconnectedness of economic prosperity and environmental stewardship.

The inauguration of the plastic recycling plant represents a significant step forward in Namibia’s journey towards environmental sustainability and economic development. Through partnerships, innovative solutions, and collective action, Namibia aims to pave the way for a more sustainable and prosperous future.
