IRDP SET TO IMPLEMENT CONSTRUCTION OF FOUR NEW BUILDING PROJECTS IN TANZANIA

The Institute of Rural Development Planning (IRDP) is implementing a mega project for the construction of four new buildings to accommodate students.

The Institute has already set aside 11bn/- in the project which includes adding buildings for academic and student hostels, focusing on improving and widening accommodation facilities and training infrastructures at the stateowned education facility.

Speaking during an interview with the `Daily News,’ the Institute’s Deputy Rector, Planning, Finance and Administration, Prof Canute Hyandye, said the ongoing project entails the construction of at least four modern-storey buildings.

He noted that the project has so far seen the construction of three major hostels, each with the capacity to roof between 250 and 270 students, whereby construction of the other accommodating structure was at an encouraging stage.

The Don said the Institute, at its Dodoma-based headquarters, can accommodate 1,132 students at a time in its hostels, which shows the low capacity given the number of students enrolled at the institution.

“We’re working out several initiatives to ensure we expand our student accommodation capacity to between 2,500 and 3,000 by 2025,” he added.

He further noted that the project is continuing at the Institute’s Miyuji campuses in the Capital City, entails the installation of two modern classrooms with the capacity to harbour 200 students each, an equipped Information Technology (ICT) office, Toilets (11), as well as Ramp stairs and modern lift, all at the ground floor.

The first floor, according to him, will see the installation of two special studio rooms, each with the capacity to absorb 200 persons at once, together with 22 toilets.

“As per the project’s design, the second floor will have a single studio room, expected to house a total of 200 students and a special computer room,” Prof Hyandye informed.

On the third floor, the vital project will construct 38 offices, each accommodating 76 staff at a go, a seminar room (with 100 person capacity), 11 toilets and a tea room.

Due to the ongoing high volume of student’s enrolment at the facility, now at 10,000 tune, he said the college was engaging stakeholders from the private sector to help offer safe, but standard accommodation services.

“Most of the students are currently sheltered at the hostels from the private operators, our key role is just to ensure their services are meeting our set standards, “ he insisted.

He said the Institute was receiving students, especially girls, of below 20 years, hence a need to ensure they’re being accommodated at safe structures, for the sake of security and good morals
