MAKENGI RESIDENTS PROTESTS OVER SLOW ROAD CONSTRUCTION IN KENYA
The ongoing construction of Mirundi-Kevote road is causing serious tension among Mekengi residents in Kenya. These tension has led to a protest by residents of the community over the slow process of constructing the road.
The protesters on Tuesday barricaded the road, causing a major traffic jam. Meanwhile during the protest, they publicly denounce the poor state of the road, saying, it becomes impassable during rainy seasons, making it difficult for them to ferry their farm produce to the markets
One of the protesters, Mrathuri Njeru, a resident of the area said “The contractor has only done one kilometre despite having been paid some money. He has even left the site and we’re concerned that the project may stall.”
During the protest, some residents said it was a shame that local leaders have remained silent on the project’s progress. That they vow to continue protesting as their pleas to have the road completed have fallen on deaf ears.
