TUNISIA PRESIDENT BEJI CAID ESSEBSI DIES AT 92
Tunisia’s first freely elected president will be remembered as a pivotal figure in his country’s occasionally tumultuous recent history
President Beji Caid Essebsi who is one of the oldest leaders in the world has passed away today 25th July, 2019. Essebsi, who was the first democratically elected leader was admitted to a hospital on Wednesday but passed away the next day.
Essebsi was also admitted to hospital last month after suffering what officials said was a severe health crisis. Meanwhile, according to the nation’s constitution, Prime Minister Youssef Chahed can take over as president for no more than 60 days or until a replacement is elected.
However, the decision must be taken by a constitutional court after it validates the president’s incapacity. But eight years after the Arab Spring, Tunisia has yet to set up a constitutional court.
Essebsi before his death declared, he will not run for the next presidential election. Saying a younger person should lead the country.
Speculation has abounded that Chahed has been mulling a presidential run ahead of the upcoming election in November.
Beji Caid Essebsi proud moment which will be remembered in Tunisia has to be his unwavering commitment to maintaining the democratic transition promised in 2011.
