MUBENDE LAUNCHED CONSTRUCTION OF JUVENILE DETENTION FACILITY IN UGANDA

Mubende District has taken a significant step forward by launching the construction of a juvenile reception center to address the issue of mixing juveniles with adult suspects, which is against the law.

The construction of the juvenile reception center is a response to the challenge of mixing juveniles with adult suspects due to the lack of proper facilities. The first phase of construction, costing Shs94 million, has commenced to address this issue.

Authorities in Mubende highlight the importance of having a dedicated reception center for juveniles, considering that the district registers over 100 cases of juveniles in contact with crimes. This initiative aims to provide a safe and appropriate environment for juvenile suspects.

The district plans to construct a three-story facility, starting with the ground level. The construction is being carried out in phases, with the ground floor expected to be completed within two months to meet the deadline of the current financial year.

The initiative has received support from various stakeholders, including the Mubende District Police Commander and the Resident District Commissioner. They acknowledge the challenges faced due to the lack of a reception center and commend the government for taking action.

During the commissioning of the construction, the Resident District Commissioner emphasized the importance of maintaining quality standards. He warned against compromising quality and reminded stakeholders of the consequences faced by district engineers and health officers for neglect of duty in a previous project.

The Resident District Commissioner asserted his role in advising and monitoring government projects, dismissing criticism from politicians. He emphasized the need for transparency and accountability in the construction process.
