BOTSWANA WITNESS FIRST LOAD SHEDDING AFTER SEVEN YEARS ABSENCE

Load shedding has returned after a seven-year absence as most parts of the country have been suffering from power cuts since last evening.

Following the blackouts, the Botswana Power Corporation (BPC) announced that it is currently experiencing power supply constraints estimated to last for a week. The Corporation also said the outages are a result of forced power cuts at BPC power generation plants resulting in demand exceeding supply. “The situation is exacerbated by the shortage of electricity generation capacity in the Southern African region as a whole.

The corporation is undertaking rotational load management across the country to balance supply and demand to prevent total system collapse,” read a statement from the BPC. The power utility also advises customers to ensure that all power outlets are treated as live at all times for safety during load management exercises. BPC is yet to produce a loading-shedding scheduled to address the matter.
