BURUNDI’S NEW PRESIDENT, EVARISTE NDAYISHIMIYE
Burundi’s new president, Evariste Ndayishimiye is ready to unite the country and change its global image. Burundi is one of the poorest countries on the continent and is losing foreign direct investments and aids. More importantly, because there are rampant human rights abuses involving the military.
President Ndayishimiye is 52-year old a retired army general who won the presidential elections in May 2020. He had been due to take office in August, but the death of Pierre Nkurunziza this month brought the succession forward. Hence, he is sworn in early following the sudden death of his predecessor.
