KenGen TO UPGRADE MASINGA HYDROPOWER DAM.

KenGen to extend Masinga dam by 2 metres.

KenGen signed a new contract with French Development Agency (AFD). They will raise the Masinga hydroelectric dam’s wall and install equipment that will pump downstream water back to the dam.

The plan is to increase the capacity of Kenya’s hydro station plants and make electricity cheap.

Masinga dam, located at the border of Machakos and Embu. The dam is the prime water reservoir for Seven Forks hydropower complex on Tana River.

The extension will help store water even during drought and hold water from overflowing during heavy rainfall.

KenGen has made this bid 3 times since 2013. The cost as 2013 when it was to be extended by 1.5 metres was US$15 million. The present deal is for 2 metres and is expected to cost more.

KenGen’s Forks Hydro stations on Tana River include Masinga power station (40 megawatts), Kamburu (94 megawatts), Gitaru (225 megawatts), Kindaruma (72 megawatts) and Kiambere (168 megawatts).
