KENYA ELECTION OFFICER RESIGNS

Election officer resigned and flee after feeling unsafe in the country just one week to the poll.

Kenya, one of Africa’s strongest country in terms of wildlife is having serious challenges this electoral period. Election result which was announced on 8 august 2017 was nullified by Kenya’s Supreme Court after allegations of widespread irregularities in the electronic transmission of vote results.

Various events happening in the country, like the killing of three people at a violent protest and many others has made a senior election official to resign and flee the country as there have been comments stating that the election board was under siege and could not hold a credible election.

At an interview with BBC Newsday, the senior election officer cited lack of cohesion among its eight members and the secretariat as the reason she decided to leave.

Roselyn Akombe; “The IEBC was under political “siege”, unable to reach consensus or take any decisions,”

According to her; “We need the commission to be courageous and speak out that this election as planned cannot meet the basic expectations of a credible election.”

Roselyn;”I have never felt the kind of fear that I felt in my own country,”

Kenyatta has accused National Super Alliance (Nasa) leader, Railia Odinga for pulling out of the race after sensing defeat and trying to cause chaos to force a power-sharing deal, something the opposition strongly denies.
