UGANDA OPEN FIRST SOLAR PLANT TO INCREASE ELECTRICITY

Uganda open first solar plant to help increase electricity as well as job opportunities for resident of that communities.

The level of solar energy utilisation in Uganda is still very low which made the country to improve by installing its first solar pv in the early 1980 but it was mainly driven by donor-funded programmes for lighting and vaccine refrigeration in health centers.

Due to poor electricity supply, the country has open a solar plant in the eastern part of the country. The plant which is one of the largest in eastern Africa will be creating around 16GWh/y of energy at the 10MW Tororo solar plant.

The Tororo solar plant will increase Uganda’s stock of installed electricity-generating infrastructure which will also be lowering the average cost of electricity across the country.

Emerging Africa Infrastructure Fund (EAIF), Chairman, David White; “Just 12 months from signing the debt finance agreement, the plant is fully productive and contributing to Uganda’s economic development,”

According to him; “The combination of the Ugandan government, skilled developers and development finance institutions with deep experience of Africa and renewable energy projects shows that the infrastructure foundations for economic progress can be now be faster than at any time in history.”

The US $19.6m plant which was developed and is operated by Building Energy, is an Italian company that will help to provide permanent job for the resident in that particular communities now that the plant is opened.
