ZIMBABWE TRANSPORT MINISTER BREAK GROUND FOR RECONSTRUCTION OF 43KM ROAD

Zimbabwe’s Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development Felix Mhona conducted a groundbreaking ceremony on 15 January for the reconstruction of a 43km section of the Shurugwi-Mhandamabwe road connecting the Midlands and Masvingo provinces.

The work is being undertaken by the local Road Trackers Construction and will be completed in 12 months.

The scope of the project includes the construction, upgrading, and widening of the road, which is a critical link between the Beitbridge border post with South Africa and the Chirundu border post with Zambia.

The US$41 million project is being funded through the National Treasury. It will help to decongest Harare by offering an alternative route to Chirundu and cutting the travel distance by approximately 200km.

According to the Zimbabwe National Road Administration (Zinara), the reconstruction of the Shurugwi-Mhandamabwe road will provide enhanced access to communities along the corridor, leading to a surge in economic activities and opportunities.
